Astrology: To believe or not to believe

Our daily newspapers carry our zodiac’s readings, predicting that we should meet up with friends in the evening, let no one ride roughshod over us during the day, etc, etc. We know about our mothers visiting either this “Baje” or that one, with our “cheena,” or birth charts, trying to figure out a way of calming our “Shani Graha.” We may also have friends interested in palmistry. In short, we aren’t without knowledge or experience of astrology and its various sidekicks. It’s not to deny that there’s truth in it. But these days, the major generalization of predictions and “guesses” leave us slightly skeptic, or have us entirely raise our eyebrows.

Who Speaks For Islam..?

In the fall of 2006, I arranged to have a house warming celebration called Milad, a Muslim Friday evening gathering and prayer, to sanctify my newly built wooden house in my village in Morang. It hadtaken me months of running around to put together the materials and men for the house—wooden planks, beams and pillars salvaged from the two-story shack my father had built years ago; recycling of an old house bought and hauled from near the East-West Highway; corrugated tin, nails, bathroom materials from Biratnagar; and the carpenter-builders from near the border.
And the disruption of the unexpected late monsoon got worse when our young helper, a Rajbanshi girl, eloped with one of the young carpenters. The rest of the carpenters fled, fearing retribution from the girls’ folk. So, when the house finally rose into shape, I planned celebration. The week before the Muslim prayer, I had had a similar gathering of the village Bhajan Mandali. My Nepali-singing villagers came with musical instruments, danced, sang, and offered consecrated sweets. Now, we were ready to celebrate Milad.

Marriage Pattern

Marriages, generally agreed upon by households, bring two households and kinship groups together within a long-lasting network. While gathering of accurate data on the stability of marriage is not possible, available information strongly indicates that marriages, in general, are highly stable. Arranged marriage, particularly among high caste people is successful in the sense that the marriage is not dissolved or replaced. Marriage, apart from its economic, political and social dimensions, also bears a pronounced spiritual underpinning.

Marriage,is socially recognised as bonding of man and woman typically for the purposes of legitimate reproduction. It is an essential institution in the establishment of nuclear family or creation of a new household. Furthermore, it is not only an opportunity to create new social bonds, it is often accompanied by prestations in the form of dan, daijo or tilak, of greater or lesser importance, as much symbolic as material, which firmly establish the marriage and set up long lasting relation between two households or families party to the exchange.

Shirbati Rajbansi
The past 2 weeks have been filled with travel. I have crossed a large part of the Nepal visiting a number of districts where our Good Return clients are situated – from the Terai plains which are made up of flat farmlands to the mountainous Ilam district. It required two days alone to travel up to the west of Nepal on a bus, an experience that I will not forget any time soon! The two main methods of transportation so far have been motorbike and local bus. At times conditions have been tough, but I’ve been spurred on by the client feedback that I’m receiving.Shirbati Rajbansi lives in a small village in the eastern part of Nepal. At the end of our meeting I asked her if she had any comments or suggestions. She said, “The loan has improved my family’s life, if I did not have access to this loan I would have to go to money lenders who only give small loans at extremely high interest.”

Cultural Identity-Meaning Details

Cultural identity is the identity of a group or culture, or of an individual as far as one is influenced by one's belonging to a group or culture. Cultural identity is similar to and has overlaps with, but is not synonymous with, identity politics.
Various modern cultural studies and social theories have investigated cultural identity. In recent decades, a new form of identification has emerged which breaks down the understanding of the individual as a coherent whole subject into a collection of various cultural identifiers. These cultural identifiers may be the result of various conditions including: location, gender, race, history,
nationality, language, sexuality, religious beliefs, ethnicity and aesthetics. The divisions between cultures can be very fine in some parts of the world, especially places such as Canada or the United States, where the population is ethnically diverse and social unity is based primarily on common social values and beliefs.

In Satya Yuga, Daksha performed a yagna with a desire of taking revenge on Lord Shiva. was angry because his daughter Sati had married Shiva against his wishes. Daksha invited all the deities to the yagna except for Shiva and Sati. The fact that she was not invited did not deter Sati from attending the yagna. But Sati, being an uninvited guest, was not given any respect. Furthermore, Daksha insulted Shiva. Sati was unable to bear her father’s insults toward her husband, so she committed suicide by jumping into the pyre. When Lord Shiva heard about her death he became furious. He went to the place where Daksha was performing his yagna and destroyed the area. Daksha was killed by Shiva’s ganas. Daksha
Lord Shiva then carried Sati’s body all over the world in a state of wild grief. At the request of all other gods, Lord Vishnu severed Sati’s body into 51 pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra, so that Lord Shiva could return to his sanity and once again take up his duties. Various parts of Sati’s body fell at different places which became known as Shakti Peethas. At all Shakti Peethas, the Goddess Shakti is accompanied by Lord Bhairava (a manifestation of Lord Shiva).

History of Terai in Nepal

Our beloved motherland of Terai is panning through a very critical stage of history. The facts of history are very stringent. The land of Terai, presently under control of Nepal, is not the owned land of king, great king or Nepali. Terai is northern part of ancient city-states like Kaushal, Kashi, Mithila (Bideha), and their city states were initially under the governance of their indigenous people. Par age of time, Sen Karnatak, Mugel emperors, British East India Company and at present non-resident Nepalese have held the governance of Terai respectively.
If we scrutinize the history of Nepal, the present capital city Kathmandu was only a transit point. Outside Kathmandu and in the hilly region there was regional autonomy of each ethnic group/cast formed because of their socio-cultural structure.
